Vehicles of Consciousness: The Concept of Hylic Pluralism (Ochema). (Trans. by N.D. Smith) Poortman, J.J.
This is considered to be the life work of Dutch philosopher and theosophist J.J. Poortman, but he did not live to complete it. He intended to write "a history of the development of the doctrine of the subtle body" (I, p. v). Ochema is Greek for "vehicle," and this work treats " a number of forms of subtler matter which serve as vehicles of an immaterial, ensouling consciousness" (I, p. vii). Poortman accomplishes two things in this work: in the first two volumes he reviews the literature of the subtle body in all times and places (even those portions that he did not live to complete are outlined in detail); and in the last two volumes he presents his theory of "Hylic Pluralism" and applies it to many aspects of psi phenomena.
