Jeane Dixon: The Witnesses

Brian, Denis

Parapsychologists have paid little attention to Jeane Dixon because she refuses to be investigated. [Brian says "She says her gift to foresee the future comes from God and she has neither time nor inclination to be a guinea pig" (p. 18)]. Moreover, the two previous books on Mrs. Dixon, one an autobiography and one on her experiences in which she collaborated, made no attempt to substantiate the experiences described. Now, Denis Brian, an "investigative reporter," novelist, and author who has increasingly evidenced an interest in parapsychology has rectified this situation. For each instance of apparent spontaneous psi he presents Mrs. Dixon's version, the testimony of other principals involved or quotes from newspapers or other written accounts, as well as the questions he put to Jeane Dixon and to the witnesses and their replies. Several cases stand up very well and some are quite detailed. Scattered throughout are clues as to the psychology of the process, such as when a chance word spoken in Jeane Dixon's presence touches off an ESP impression. Mr. Brian has done an excellent job in tracking down the witnesses and in presenting the fullest description we have of Mrs. Dixon's abilities. In a summary chapter, he reviews the claims of the skeptics and the believers as regards psi in general and Jeane Dixon's psychic ability in particular. He concludes that "the accumulation of evidence in this book is so remarkable, that the skeptics must find other explanations than luck, faulty reporting, weak memories, inside information—to explain it away" (p. 207).
