In Search of Shangri-La: A Personal Journey to Tibet

Jensen, Bernard

The author is a holistic nutritionist who has studied indigenous healing practices throughout the world. In 1955 he founded the Hidden Valley Health Ranch in Escondido, CA. This is a journal in which he recorded his experiences from September 15-October 6, 1986 as he travelled through China and Tibet, searching for Shangri-La. He notes he had thoughts there he had never before had. There—on top of the world—he could take a bird’s eye view of the nature of life in general and his life in particular. Moreover, "in the quiet of Tibet it often seemed like someone speaking through me to me, perhaps not in an audible voice but in flurries of ideas that crossed my mind" (p. viii). The journal consists of two types of entries—those representing his own thoughts (unsigned) and those coming to him from his higher self, which are signed "Spiritual Brother" or "Spiritual Guardian." He presents his exceptional experiences from the conviction that it is important to share such experiences with others rather than to hide them in a secret inner place where they can do no good to anyone. Nearly three-fourths of the entries are from his "higher self," sometimes followed by an entry issuing from his conscious mind, in which he comments on or adds to what his "spiritual brother" said. Ultimately, his message is that inspiring though his visit to Tibet was, he discovered that each person, including himself, has a Shangri-La within—wherever one is in the world.
