Psi Development SystemsMishlove, Jeffrey
A revision of the author's dissertation in which he attempts to present a "framework for the legitimate academic evaluation, design and practice of programs for the cultivation of psi" (p. 1). Mishlove also tries "to define parapsychology on new terms as a discipline in and of itself" (p. 1), based on a new synthesis with three characteristics: the extension of "the self-conscious history of parapsychology further into its historical traditions" (p. 1), a critical evaluation of popular programs, and the establishment of a disciplinary matrix that would allow parapsychology to serve as a dual discipline for individual self-actualization and as a means of scientific progress. Psi development systems are reviewed within three contexts, the prescientific traditions, such as shamanism, yoga, and ceremonial magic; popular psi development systems, such as spiritualism, the Rosicrucian Order, and Transcendental Meditation; and experimental parapsychology, represented by studies of feedback, hypnosis, and relaxation. In the final chapter, a systems approach is applied to psi development procedures. The relationship of parapsychology and humanistic psychology is also discussed.
