InterViews: An Introduction to Qualitative Research InterviewingKvale, Steinar
The author is a leader in the development and use of qualitative research method and theory. He uses this two-pronged approach in this useful and enlightening volume in that it is both about how to conduct and analyze research interview methodology and describes the phenomenological and hermeneutic theoretical underpinnings of the techniques described. In essence, a research interview is one in which both persons give and get something: the result is the product of their joint effort. What is most important is the new thing that develops between them. This is a very satisfying book because of its practical and theoretical approach. An overview is presented in Part I. Part II conceptualizes the research interview, including "The Interview as Conversation," "Postmodern Thought, Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, and Dialectics," and "Qualitative Research in Science and in Practice." Part III is entitled "The Seven Stages of an Interview Investigation." It consists of 10 chapters on the interview itself, its design, ethical aspects, recording, analysis, interpretation, validity, and reporting. The concluding part is about interview studies themselves, how they have been received, 10 objections to this type of research, internal critiques, and his assessment of the status and future prospects of qualitative research interviewing. This is a highly useful book for anyone who interviews people who have had exceptional or exceptional human experiences. The extensive bibliography will assist practitioners to find further sources of information on this approach.
