The Nature of Mind: Parapsychology and the Role of Consciousness in the Physical World Stokes, Douglas M.
This is a sound overview of serious parapsychological research that is accessible to the educated layperson. He begins, as did the field itself, with spontaneous psychic experiences of ordinary persons, discussing pro and con explanations. There are chapters on the poltergeists; out-of-body experiences and bilocations; healers; precognition; psychokinesis; apparitions; haunts; deathbed visions; NDEs, and other evidence for survival of death; reincarnation; and a chapter on bizarre forms of survival evidence, such as weighing the soul and electronic voice phenomena. He discusses theories as an aspect of every chapter, but they are the focal point of the last two, "The Mind’s Fate Upon Death" and "Mind and Cosmos." These are informed by Stokes’ acquaintance with consciousness research beyond parapsychology proper. He emphasizes the light parapsychological phenomena throws on the questions "Who" and "What" we are. The reference list is as impressive as the text is readable.
