This volume is based on the author's Gifford Lectures for the academic year 1986-87, but his interest in the topic began 40 years earlier. In the first chapter he points out that there are three possible means of survival. He characterizes these as the reconstitutionist method, the "astral body" method, and the "platonic criticism" approach, which he first developed in an essay reprinted in Wheatley and Edge. These philosophical views are discussed further in Chapters 2-6. Personal identity is the subject of Chapters 7 and 8. He discusses the mind-body problem in Chapter 9, and in the final chapter, "The Significance of Parapsychology," he poses the following problem: "The very concepts of psi are just as much involved with the human body as are those of all other distinctively human. . . . concepts" (p. 183). | |
