Parapsychology, Philosophy and Religious Concepts: Proceedings of an International Conference Held in Rome, Italy, August 23-24, 1985Shapin, Betty, & Coly, Lisette (Eds.).
The papers given at this conference on religion and parapsychology were varied. The most general piece is probably the appendix, which is a reprint of J.B. Rhine's "The Parapsychology of Religion—A New Branch of Inquiry." A theoretical approach is taken by Steven M. Rosen ("Psi and the Principle of Non-dual Duality"), Michael Perry ("Understanding and Explanation"), and John Rossner ("The Psychic Area as the Missing Link Between the Sacred and the Profane in Modern Western Civilization"). Emphasis on mystical experiences and psi is given in the papers by Emilio Servadio ("Mysticism and Parapsychology"), Sergio Bernardi ("Shamanism and Parapsychology"), and Leslie Price ("Theosophy as a Problem for Psychical Research"). The implications of psi for religion are dealt with by James A. Hall ("A Jungian Perspective on Parapsychology: Implications for Science and Religion"), and Michael Grosso ("The God Idea: A Parapsychological Perspective"). Rhea A. White emphasizes ways in which religion can assist parapsychology ("Meaning, Metanoia and Psi"). The discussions following the papers are included.
