Narrative AnalysisRiessman, Catherine Kohler
This could serve as a useful text for researchers (or indeed, experiencers) in analyzing accounts of exceptional human experiences. The purpose of this approach is to analyze how the story was put together, "the linguistic and cultural resources it draws on, and how it persuades a listener of authenticity" (p. 2). There are three parts. The first provides the theoretical groundwork for the methodological material in the next two. She presents the key concepts and debates in the field of narrative theory." Actual models of narrative analysis that relate to the theory" (p. 6) are given in the third chapter. It "outlines two current dilemmas: validation in narrative studies and limitations of the method" (p. 6). Thus, this is a nuts and bolts handbook, but it also is richly informed by theory. A very useful bibliography is appended.
