Heightened Consciousness: The Mystical Difference Granfield, David
In the Introduction, Granfield writes: "The book involves these major topics: (1) The potentiality in the conscious subject for mystical openness; (2) The theophanies, pre-mystical and mystical, as the goal and actualization of these potentialities; (3) The affirmative means through created analogies in the kataphatic way; (4) The negative means through transcending created forms and inordinate desires in the apophatic way; (5) The natural techniques, aided by grace, to remove the impediments to those two ways; (6) The revealed first principle for completely opening the mind and heart to God; and (7) The culminating fulfillment by participation in Triune consciousness through the indwelling Spirit of Jesus. As an attempt at an integrated understanding of mysticism from the perspective of conscious intentionality, the book brings the whole question of mysticism into a new light; how body and soul, nature and grace work together in that fulfillment through the Spirit which is a heightened consciousness of the loving presence of the Trinity" (p. 3). In an Epilogue, Granfield uses light as a metaphor for the stages of enlightenment.
