Sacred Paths: Essays on Wisdom, Love, and Mystical RealizationFeuerstein, Georg
In the foreword, Stephan Bodian, editor of Yoga Journal, states that "sanskrit scholar George Feuerstein...[combines] impeccable scholarship with the immediacy of one who has practiced yoga." Feuerstein’s aim in this book is to help us to restore the element of the sacred in our lives, for without it, we cannot be whole. To rediscover the holy, he recommends drawing from the world’s spiritual traditions. Here he presents 26 essays on three major traditions from India: Yoga, Vedanta, and Tantra. Some selections would appeal primarily to newcomers, but others speak to advanced students. In addition to yoga in general, there are chapters on the various types of yoga and aspects of yoga, such as posture; the practice of silence; meditation; nonharming; sacramental sexuality; Patanjali; and eco-yoga. The latter applies to all yoga, which is balance. He reviews the yoga code as it applies to creating a sustainable environment on Earth. There is a chapter on Hindu views of immortality and one on scientific approaches to yoga, which is a first-rate survey. Refreshingly, Feuerstein uses the first person often, so we know where he is coming from. He stands up for it and does not hide it. His style is very readable without writing down to the reader. He teaches as he leads. This is an excellent introduction to and handbook on yoga and related practices of India.
