The Dancing Healers: A Doctor's Journey of Healing With Native AmericansHammerschlag, Carl A.
Although the author is a physician, this book reads like a novel. It is an autobiography written in the conviction that "all stories speak to us. Understanding this connection is crucial . . . . We must learn to feel how other people connect to one another and to the universe" (preface). After completing his medical internship in 1965, Hammerschlag entered the Indian Health Service to fulfill his military obligation. Assigned to the Pueblos, he learned there was something "more" that his textbooks had not taught him, but the 7-day round the clock pace was discouraging, and he went back to Yale to become a psychiatrist. He returned to the Indian Health Service in 1970 as Chief of Psychiatry in Phoenix. In this book he tells his stories and those of his Indian patients, and of how he "came to understand that the power to heal comes from hearing your own music and dancing your own dance" (preface).
