Near-Death Experiences: An Annotated BibliographyBasford, Terry K.
This important bibliography is not only a very useful resource for those interested in studying near-death experiences, but because it is annotated, it is worth reading in itself in order to obtain, in a relatively short time period, an insightful overview of NDEs and related experiences. The bibliography is in three parts: the first, entitled Near-Death Experiences, covers publications about "`unusual' experiences reported by survivors of close encounters with death" (p. viii). The second section covers deathbed experiences, and the third, "Analogues of Near-Death Experiences," such as chemically-induced experiences, out-of-body experiences, and various mental states and perceptions, such as autoscopy, visionary literature, psychical research, and historical accounts/lore. The bibliography focuses on material that critically examines or reflects on NDEs rather than purely anecdotal accounts. It is limited to books, artices, and theses. There is a useful author index.
