Let Your Body Interpret Your DreamsGendlin, Eugene T.
Eugene Gendlin developed the technique of focusing, which involves remembering and finding solutions by means of a felt sense that is physical. In this book he applies the technique of focusing to dreams. In focusing one makes use of a sense of conviction that is mediated by subtle body responses. Gendlin insists that in the case of dreams, "there is no interpretation until something pops out for the dreamer, concretely and experientially, in response to" a hypothesis that has been suggested. "You slowly ask the body's felt sense a question. If nothing comes, proceed to another question. . . . When the felt sense itself answers, there is a physical signal, a tension release, a felt shift" (p. 3). In addition, he describes two stages of dream interpretation. In the first one, one gets a felt perception of what the dream is about. In the second stage, one gets a felt sense of something new for one's self-development. In the first chapter, he sets forth the general questions he asks of dreams, followed by a chapter on pointers, such as how to remember dreams. There are 20 brief chapters. Each one deals with a specific aspect of dreaming and encouraging the felt response to it. His technique could be used to interpret the import and meaning of EE/EHEs.
