Rethinking Methods in Psychology

Smith, Jonathan A., Harré, Rom, & Langenhove, Luke Van (Eds.).

This is a companion volume to a theoretical volume, whereas here they emphasize methodologies "consonant with a shift to a post-positivist, non-experimental paradigm" (p. 1). The guiding principles used by the editors in presenting methods were that (1) research he conducted in the "real world"; (2) that the central role of language and discourse be recognized; (3) that life and research be perceived as processual or as a "set of dynamic interactions" (p. 3); and (4) that the research concern individuals and persons, not actuarial statistics and variables. This fits in well with studying EHEers, EHEs, and the EHE process. The methods are presented as chapters devoted to semi-structured interviewing and qualitative analysis; grounded theory; life-stories, conversation analysis, discourse analysis; basic principles of transcription; role play; co-operative inquiry; rethinking the role of quantitative methods; repertory grids; and Q methodology.
