Practical Philosophy of SportKretchmar, R. Scott
The aim of this book is to help readers—especially undergraduate physical education students and athletes—to develop their philosophic skills, give them some possible answers to philosophical questions, and "to assist them in developing a personal philosophy of sport, exercise, science, and physical education" (p. xiii). Part I has three chapters that deal with philosophic skills in general, and then applying it to various dualistic and holistic theories of persons and bodies. Part II has 4 chapters on The Values of Sport Exercise Science, and Physical Education as regards society’s needs, important life values, and the extrinsic and intrinsic values of fitness, knowledge, skill, and pleasure. The role of EHEs in sport, as exposed in being in a state of "flow" or "in the zone" is discussed in the latter. The last section is an application of philosophic thinking in life as regards physical education in regard to making significant changes in education and physical education, the significance of games and play (which has a good treatment of meaning and narrative in games) and ethical decisions). The final chapter is a guide to writing one’s personal philosophy which may help to enliven the athletic and physical education professions.
