Health for the Whole Person: The Complete Guide to Holistic Medicine

Hastings, Arthur C., Fadiman, James, & Gordon, James S. (Eds.)

Based on a report prepared by the Institute of Noetic Sciences for the National Institute of Mental Health, this book is aimed at both the health care professional and the layperson in order to brief them on "attitudes, information and tools for a holistic approach to medicine, health and mental health" (p. xi). Each chapter is written by a specialist and surveys a specific topic in six broad subject areas: Holistic Medicine, The Context of Health, Modalities for Health and Mental Health, Applications Through the Life Cycle, Alternative Medical Aspects, and Social and Political Implications. A subsection on the Role of the Mind contains chapters on meditation and holistic medicine by Deane H. Shapiro, Jr., on psychic healing by Stanley Krippner, and on the placebo effect by Herbert Benson and Mark D. Epstein. A primary feature is the extensive bibliography following each chapter which contains lengthy annotations of the most important practical and theoretical books and articles on the preceding subject.
