Staying Alive: The Psychology of Human Survival

Walsh, Roger

This book by psychiatrist Roger Walsh is not on survival of death but survival of life. It is about combating the threat of global extinction, an extinction that we are in mortal danger of bringing on ourselves. It is a call to wake up to the nature of the global problems that beset the planet Earth. At base, he attempts to show both that the problems may have largely psychological roots, and that in psychology, or our minds, may also lie the solutions. He attempts to set forth a "global psychology aimed at human survival" (p. xvii). The book is in four main sections aimed at (1) outlining the nature of current global threats, (2) analyzing their psychological causes, (3) deducing principles of effective response, and (4) examining the psychological impact that the threats exert on us, both collectively and individually. Walsh not only provides a conceptual framework for global problems centered in the view that at base we are all one, but he presents a practical chapter outlining what each individual can do. A partial list of organizations working toward the resolution of global problems is given in an appendix.
