Placebos and the Philosophy of Medicine: Clinical, Conceptual, and Ethical Issues

Brody, Howard

Brody is both a physician and a philosopher. This volume is based on his Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy at Michigan State. He provides an extensive review of the literature on the placebo effect and devotes a chapter to the definition of placebo effect. Three chapters are devoted to mind-body theories with a view to finding one which fits both the empirical data and his definition. He includes chapters on the ethical problems involved in using placebos and on research and therapeutic implications. There is an extensive bibliography.
