Aikido and the New Warrior

Heckler, Richard Strozzi (Ed.)

The emphasis of this anthology is on the application of Aikido principles to various professions, including "education, psychology, conflict resolution, health, law enforcement, management relations, business, and sports" (p. 1). The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, "developed a martial form that empowered human beings from the inside out, without . . . contests to see who is best. He said that the `opponent is within' and that we must first work with our own minds and bodies instead of trying to correct others" (p. 2). There are 18 selections which taken together provide a balanced introduction to Aikido. There is a chapter about Ueshiba and two pieces by him. Seven additional chapters are on Aikido and its philosophy, one by George Leonard. There follows a chapter on Aikido and baseball by Sadahara Oh, and healing by Richard Moon, on taming, by O. Fred Donaldson, on teaching Aikido to children by the author, a feminist approach to Aiko by Megan Reisel, one on basketball by Jeff Haller, and on Aikido and the Feldenkrais method by Cheryl S. Reinhardt on the similarities between Aikido and brief strategic therapy by Donald T. Saposnek.
