After Death—What? Researches Into Hypnotic and Spiritualistic Phenomena

Lombroso, Cesare

This classic book has been reprinted as a volume in the Cohn Wilson Library of the Paranormal. Lombroso was an Italian physician and psychiatrist who conducted pioneer research into hypnosis and mediumistic phenomena. Although initially he was skeptical, Lombroso’s investigations (described here) convinced him that the phenomena were real, although he could not accept the spiritualistic explanation of the results. He describes his investigations of Eusapia Palladino and other mediums, phantasms and apparitions of the dead, primitive beliefs in spirits of the dead, the question of personal identity, the phenomena of doubles, spirit photography, and apports. There is a chapter on counterhypotheses, and there are concluding theoretical chapters in which he attempts to construct a biology and psychology of spirits.
