Frontiers of Social Theory: The New Syntheses

Ritzer, George (Ed.).

Nine of the 15 papers in this book were presented at a conference intended to bring together the younger generation of leaders of social and sociological theory to assess the theory's current status and short-term projects" (p. vii). The remaining papers were prepared especially for this volume in order to insure that several additional developments in current sociological theorizing were represented. In the Preface, Ritzer notes that an unanticipated pattern emerged: "Most of them in one way or another deal with a range of new synthesizing developments within social theory. There is clearly a move away from adherence to a given theory and a focus on a single level of social reality and toward synthesizing theories and analyzing the interrelations among various levels of analysis" (pp. xii-xiii). Those interested in new approaches to studying EHEs would profit from this book. Sociology is in a very good position to honor both the needs of empirical and theoretical research. Methodological approaches are either explicitly or implicitly present in a number of theories. Of special relevance to EHEs are the papers on symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, French structuralisms, the postmodern turn, feminist sociological theory, and micro-macro linkage.
