The Seer in Celtic and Other Traditions

 Based on papers given at a symposium at Oxford organized on behalf of the Folklore Society, this volume contains 10 papers arranged in two parts. All deal with "second sight," or "the involuntary seeing of what is invisible to normal sight" (p. 7). The 5 papers in Part I concern "The Celtic Seer." Their titles and authors are: "The Seer in Gaelic Tradition," by John MacInnes; "Some Personal Experiences of the Second Sight," by Eilidh Watt; "The Saint as Seer: Adomnan's Account of Columba," by John MacQueen; "Prophecy in Middle Welsh Tradition," by Juliette Wood; and "The Seer's Thumb," by Hilda Ellis Davidson. The 5 chapters in Part II, "Comparative Studies of the Seer," are "Dead Reckoning: The Church Porch Watch in British Society," by Samuel Pyeatt Menefee; "The Seer in Ancient Israel," by J.R. Porter; "The Seer as a Healer in Japan," by Carmen Blacker; "The Chinese Tradition of Prophecy," by Michael Loewe; and "The Role of the Seer Within the Punjabi Asian Minority of Britain," by Venetia Newall.
