The Psychobiology of Consciousness

Davidson, Julian M., & Davidson, Richard J. (Eds.)

Neuroendocrinologist Julian Davidson and psychobiologist Richard Davidson state that their aim is to present "the best available theory, research, and speculation in areas related to the psychobiology of consciousness." There are 15 chapters, all original, arranged in seven sections, each dealing with an aspect of the psychobiology of consciousness: (1) general issues, (2)chemical approaches, (3) electrophysiological techniques, (4)cognitive and developmental approaches, 5) cybernetic and systems approaches, (6) the psychobiology of transformations of consciousness, and (7) philosophical issues. The authors all agree that the mind depends on the brain in some critical ways and that in any attempt to understand complex behavioral phenomena biological variables need to be considered. Of particular interest to parapsychologists are "A systems approach to altered states of consciousness" by C. Tart; "The psychophysiological modelof meditation" by M. Schuman; "Toward a psychobiology of transcendence:God in the brain," by A.and J. Mandell; and "Prospects for the scientific observer of perceptual consciousness" by G. Globus and S. Franklin.
