The Inward Arc: Healing & Wholeness in Psychotherapy & SpiritualityVaughan, Frances
The author writes in the Preface: "In this book I have attempted to offer a new vision of healing and wholeness for the purpose of enhancing well-being at any level on the spectrum of consciousness and pointing the way to liberation." It deals with the psychodynamics of healthy functioning and integrates healthy psychological development with the traditional spiritual quest. Vaughan attempts to unite the psychological and spiritual approaches. There are chapters on the transpersonal self, healing awareness, and ways of mapping the spiritual path (Christian metaphors, Chakra symbolism, and the ox-herding pictures of Zen). A chapter is devoted to "guidance on the path," and discusses possible pitfalls that can be encountered. Insight and inspiration for healing as expressed in dreams and creativity is the subject of another chapter. Some cases of possible ESP in dreams, including one of her own, are described on pages 159-160. There is a chapter on healing relationships "as an essential aspect of emerging awareness of wholeness and optional relational exchange at any stage of development" (p. 7). The final chapter is on "transpersonal vision," which Vaughan feels is "a faculty that can be trained to transcend fragmented perceptions of reality in a new vision of wholeness" (p. 7).
