Australian sociologist Cherie Sutherland is an NDEr herself. She has given many talks about NDEs and often is asked the same questions. She presents accounts from 20 children, women, and men and designed this book so that a chapter each is devoted to the most commonly asked questions. The answers are given in the words of the 20 NDErs, interspersed with background information/discussion by Sutherland. Pseudonyms were used and identifying information changed. Sutherland provides a brief Introductory overview. The questions answered, by chapter, are (1) Whether children have NDEs and if so, what they see; (2) What happens to suicides? (3) Do some people have negative experiences? (4) At what point do people decide to come back? (5) What do people see who get to the "other side"? In a brief Afterword, in so many words Sutherland points out that accounts of near-death experiences offer insights "to be shared with all humanity. ... by truly hearing what they have to tell us, we can all participate in this process. Not only do they teach that death is a homecoming ... [but] that that love and that light are already here in our lives" (p. 214). Thus is the Experiential Paradigm revealed and if everyone knew about it at an early age, it would be bound to make a different to our species and human life on earth. |
