Aristocracy of the Dead: New Findings in Postmortem Survival Berger, Arthur S.
According to philosopher Antony Flew, lawyer/parapsychologist Arthur Berger takes a new approach in this book to the question of whether or not there is survival after death. In the first four chapters, Berger presents the existing evidence for and against survival as found in the parapsychological literature. In Chapter 4, Berger begins the presentation of his new approach. First, he proposes that we question two widely held assumptions that may have served as blocks to progress in investigating survival: (1) that if any survive all do and (2) if one person is able to communicate after death, all should be able to communicate with equal facility. He reanalyzes key cases in the literature that indicate that some persons communicate better than others. Based on a sample of good communicators, he sets forth their characteristics and qualities. He then proposes that in looking for survival evidence, good communicators should be made the focus of study. He cites an example where evidence for survival was obtained in the case of a man who met several of the criteria for good communicators. He concludes with the proposal that instead of starting the investigation of survival when a person dies, researchers should look among the living for possible "star" communicators and work with and train them in the art of communicating and establishing their identity when they eventually do die.
