Psychical Research: A Guide to Its History, Principles and Practices

Grattan-Guinness, Ivor (Ed.).

This is an introductory guide to parapsychology consisting of 30 original contributions by specialists. History is covered in five sections. Under "The Range of Psychical Phenomena" there are ten chapters, one each devoted to mediumship, OBES, apparitions, clairvoyance and telepathy, survival, poltergeists, psychic healing, precognition, psychokinesis, and photography (psychic and Kirlian). There are ten chapters on "Aspects of Psychical Research," such as techniques for investigating spontaneous cases, hypnosis, statistics, computers, ethics, and teaching. The fourth section consists of eight chapters relating psychical research to psychology, psychiatry, brain research, physics, the established sciences, other unorthodox disciplines (Ufology, astrology, dowsing), religion, and the media. This volume was compiled by mathematician and SPR Council Member Ivor Grattan-Guinness to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882.
