The Society for Psychical Research, 1882-1982: A HistoryHaynes, Renée | |
This is an account of the work of the Society for Psychical Research, the founding of which in 1882 is generally cited as the beginning of a serious scientific approach to the study of psi. It is the fourth book on the subject by Renée Haynes, who edited the Society’s Proceedings and Journal from 1970-1981. The first three chapters are on the SPR and its beginnings. There follow two chapters on apparitions, and one each on cross correspondences, mental mediums, haunts and poltergeists, physical mediums, controversy and fraud, and a summary of achievements and future prospects. There is a very useful chronological list with biographical sketches of the presidents of the SPR, and an appendix describing the Perrott-Warrick Studentship, and one on John Cutten’s "I ghost detector." | |
