States of Awareness: An Annotated BibliographyMiletich, John J. (compiler)
This bibliography consists of over 1,000 items published between 1984 and the first quarter of 1988. Included are listings for books, articles, conference proceedings, and dissertations. The compiler is a reference librarian who views altered states as disrupters of an individual's social role. Therefore, the book is aimed principally at members of the helping professions because "the more one knows about states of awareness, the better we can account for, manage, overcome, and prevent them" (p. ix). The bibliography consists of 9 broad subject areas, each containing annotated listings of documents arranged alphabetically by author's last name. The categories are depersonalization, sleepwalking, amnesia, anesthesia, thyroid disorders, near-death experience, deja vu, out-of-body experience, and sensory deprivation. In addition there are author, subject, and personal name indexes to persons cited in the annotations.
