With the Eyes of the Mind: An Empirical Analysis of Out-of-body States

Gabbard, Glen O., & Twemlow, Stuart W.

The authors of this book attempt to "delineate both descriptive and psychological aspects of the out-of-body experience" and to "differentiate the prototype from other forms of altered mind/body perception" (p. x). They view these states as being on "a continuum ranging from integrating and noetic experiences to highly pathological disturbances of body boundaries" (p. x). Portions of seven of the eleven chapters are taken from previously published articles of the authors (sometimes joined by F. C. Jones). The book is in four parts: "The Out-of-Body Experience" (two chapters), "Differentiation of the Out-of-Body States" (four chapters), "The Near-Death Experience" (three chapters), and "Understanding the Out-of-Body Experience" (four chapters).
