This lavishly illustrated book offers traditional and current insights into the processes of dying and death and views them as precursors to new life and conciousness. Ancient religious beliefs and mythologies are seen to refer to psychic realities that are experienced in altered states and that are intrinsic to human personality and should not be denied. For the full expression of human nature, they must be recognized, acknowledged and explored, and in this exploration, the traditional depictions of the after-life can be our guide" (p. 31). The death of the body may be the door to "an adventure in consciousness." The encounter with death is described in many contexts: in near-death experiences, in schizophrenic and psychedelic states, and in traditional mythological and religious views of death, rebirth, and the afterlife.
