The Power of Trees: The Reforesting of the SoulPerlman, Michael
This interesting volume in a sense could serve as a manual for working with EHEs associated with trees. I feel a special affinity with trees, which this book indicates is quite common. I can easily recall many individual trees in my life and how they soothed and strengthened me—probably as many as I can recall people, and there are quite a few of those. Perlman is an imaginal psychologist, and in this book he explores actual experiences of specific trees and the imaginal fecundity and value of trees for Homo sapiens. There are two main parts. The first consists of "Biographical Woodscapes," including recollections of individuals concerning specific trees of power and first-hand experiences, several bordering on EHEs. Part 2, "The Psychological Nature of Trees," is about imaginal approaches to trees: tree spirits, trees of pain and war, trees of solidarity and peace, and a chapter on the seductive, sensual aspect of trees, which he refers to as "Aphrodite’s Woods." He obtained the accounts described from personal interviews with people following loss of trees in hurricanes and from literature. Thus he presents many examples of the personal meaning of trees, and by relating them to literature and works of the imagination, he further develops their meaning.
