What is Enlightenment? Exploring the Goal of the Spiritual PathWhite, John (Ed.)
White conceives of this work as a sequel to his first book, The Highest State of Consciousness (1972). Three of the selections from the earlier anthology are reprinted here because of their timeless value. There are 15 selections in this volume compared to 33 in Highest State. Each one concerns an aspect of following the spiritual path. The selections are by Richard M. Bucke, Alan Watts, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Underhill, Huston Smith, Allan Y. Cohen, Satprem, Lex Hixon, Roger Walsh, Gopi Krishna, Dane Rudhyar, Da Free John, Ken Wilber, and John White (2 pieces). In Appendix 1, White describes some maps of reality and the "seven stages of life" according to Da Free John. In Appendix 2, "Women and Enlightenment," White briefly surveys acknowledged female adepts of the world's religious traditions. The third appendix, "Suggestions for Further Exploration," is a bibliography arranged by four broad subjects: Consciousness research, meditation and prayer, mysticism and sacred traditions, and women and spiritual life. The fourth and last appendix provides fairly lengthy paragraphs describing each author.
