Philosophers in Wonderland: Philosophy and Psychical ResearchFrench, Peter A. (Ed.).
In this anthology, Professor French, who teaches philosophy at the University of Minnesota at Morris, attempts "to set forth a series of critical examinations into the propositions and beliefs of psychical research insofar as they are related to serious philosophical questions . . . A primary consideration which affected the choice of selections . . . was each author's employment of the tools and techniques of philosophical analysis as applied to the beliefs, theories and episodic accounts which characterize the Wonderland world of psychical research . . . the prevailing attitude throughout is critical and more than a bit skeptical . . . This book's central theme is that understanding this world of the psychical researchers necessitates an understanding of the concepts used to describe such a world. This understanding is at base philosophical" (p. viii). The book consists of an introductory chapter by French and 25 selections arranged as eight symposia on the following subjects: dreams, space, time, mind and body, personal identity, psi phenomena and knowledge, survival, and the scientific acceptability of psi phenomena. French contributes an introduction to each symposium that relates the symposium topic to psychical research and points out its philosophical implications. Of the 25 selections, 12 are directly on parapsychology, three are tangentially relevant, and the remaining nine are solely on philosophy.
