The Return From Silence: A Study of Near-Death ExperiencesRogo, D. Scott
Rogo's aim in this volume was to provide "the first comprehensive overview of NDE research specifically written for the general public . . [and] to summarize the best available research . . and then point out both the strengths and the problems with the evidence" (pp. 5-6). He begins by defining the characteristics of the NDE and giving examples of different types. There are two chapters on historical accounts of NDEs, both religious and secular. There are chapters on contemporary NDE research, children's NDEs, drug-induced NDEs, negative NDEs, the skeptical stance concerning NDEs, and paranormal aspects of the NDE. Rogo distinguishes between two types of NDEs--simple NDEs, in which a person is or thinks he or she is close to death and has an out-of-body experience, and eschatological NDEs, in which a person's experience fulfills the criteria of the simple NDE but also, while out of the body, experiences "some sort of otherworld journey in which he/she perceives the final resting place of the soul" (p. 19). The last two chapters offer explanations of both types of NDEs.
