The Unfathomed Mind: A Handbook of Unusual Mental Phenomena

Corliss, William R. (Comp.).

The compiler, a physicist and freelance writer on science and technology, presents this collection of source materials that indicate that "the mind has powerful, subtle, often bizarre influences on the human body, human behavior, and perhaps even the so-called objective external world" (p. v). Most of the material has been excerpted from medical and psychological journals. Parapsychological material is included, but Corliss admits to being "somewhat negative on `psi' and ESP" (p. v). Criteria for including material were: (1) current scientific theories are contradicted by it; or, (2) it raises questions not answered sufficiently by the accepted literature. There are six main sections: (1) "Dissociative Behavior: Other Control Centers," (2) "The Possible Acquisition of Hidden Knowledge," (3) "Anomalous Modes of Information Processing," (4) "Hallucinations: Sensing What is Not," (5) "Remarkable Mind-Body Interactions," and (6) "Mind Over Matter." Each chapter has its own detailed table of contents.
