Two anthropologists compiled this anthology of case histories of spirit possession, defined by Crapanzano as "any altered state of consciousness indigenously interpreted in terms of the influence of an alien spirit" (p. 7). There are 10 case studies by various authors, eight of which have not been previously published. Although dealing with different cultures, each case is characterized by the fact that the possessing spirits are not explained away but are empathized with and taken at face value for purposes of understanding the Lebenswelt of the possessed. Raymond Prince, in the Foreword, notes that for him the most interesting aspect of these studies is the therapeutic value of possession for individuals suffering from psychiatric disorders.
