Unusual Personal Experiences: An Analysis of the Data from Three National SurveysRoper Organization
This report was mailed to nearly 100,000 psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals. It opens with a commentary by John E. Mack, followed by the "The UFO Syndrome Report" by Budd Hopkins, David Michael Jacobs, and Ron Westrum (the abstract of which follows the present paragraph). Then comes the Roper Organization’s survey on which their report is based, a commentary on it by John Carpenter, and an Afterword by Robert Bigelow. The abstract states: "A survey of UFO abduction-related experiences in the United States adult population is reported. The results of an ostensible UFO abduction are symptoms akin to posttraumatic stress, with subjects reporting diffuse anxieties, disturbing dreams, sleep disturbances and iamgery related to the abduction experience. UFO abduction memories may be an unacceptable to the subject or therapist, or both, so eliciting them may require additional effort. This report documents the kinds of symptoms likely to be expected with such subjects, and indicates the symptoms' relationship to the abduction experience. The incidence of abduction experiences appears to be on the order of at least 2% of the population. Additional literature and resources for further inquiry are indicated.
