Who Comes After the Subject?Cadava, Eduardo, Connor, Peter, & Nancy, Jean-Luc (Eds.).
The edge of postmodern thought is generally led by French philosophers. The essays in this volume present the current research of 19 contemporary French philosophers who deconstruct (i.e., critique) the topic of subjectivity. The contributors are Sylviane Agacinski, Alain Badiou, Etienne Balibar, Maurice Blanchot, Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, Jean-Francois Courtine, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Vincent Descombes, Didier Franck, Gerard Granel, Michel Henry, Luce Irigary, Sarah Kofman, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean-Luc Marion, and Jacques Ranciere. It would be impossible to review what these thinkers have to say in the space available. Let me point out instead why I think a book like this is of central importance in the study of EHEs. First of all, many EHEs do not make sense within the modern paradigm. The best chance, therefore, is to look for a new paradigm, one that would be more hospitable to such experiences and one that would provide a handle that would elucidate their nature and meaning. Moreover, these experiences have a common feature in that they provide a window on a conception of the nature of one's self that is new to most experients. Therefore, a new book on new thinking concerning who one is certainly is likely to be relevant to the subject of EHEs.
