The Roaring of the Sacred River: The Wilderness Quest for Vision and Self-Healing Foster, Steven, & Little, Meredith
The authors are directors of the School of Lost Borders, which promotes and conducts vision quests in order to encourage people to find personal meaning and self-healing. They encourage individuals to find and weave their own story, often including "an experience of heightened or nonordinary reality" (p. 59), that is, an exceptional human experience. They describe the various stages of the vision quest, including preparation for it and the aftermath. Through the lens of the vision quest, they depict the traditional spiritual path, except that these individuals often use secular experiences and nonreligious language. The experiences, nonetheless, are the same. The authors use Native American legends, which is certainly appropriate, for American Indians first developed the vision quest. In a wider sense, this book is about helping people who are undergoing spiritual emergencies—helping them, that is, to help themselves.
