Babies Remember Birth: and Other Extraordinary Scientific Discoveries About the Mind and Personality of Your Newborn Chamberlain, David B.
This survey of the frontier of research in pre- and perinatal psychology, although written by a leading researcher, is aimed at the general reader. Chamberlain reviews findings that show that newborns are very conscious individuals, but the bulk of the book is devoted to what he learned in 13 years of research into birth memories with the help of hypnosis. He recorded hundreds of accounts and developed a method to establish reliability by a comparison of mother/child couples in hypnosis. He states: "What we find in birth memories is consistent with what is found in modern research: the newborn brain, nervous system, and physical senses are active and coordinated; a normal range of human emotions is felt and expressed where the infant mind is alert, perceptive, exploring, and busy incorporating each new experience" (p. xxiii). An appendix contains a wise statement expressing Chamberlain's views on abortion, which he sees as a very complex (not black and white) issue.
