Unlearned Language: New Studies in Xenoglossy Stevenson, Ian
Detailed, authenticated cases of xenoglossy, or the ability to speak a foreign language not learned normally, and especially responsive xenoglossy, in which the subject engages in intelligible conversation in the foreign language spoken, are very rare. Stevenson has already published one such case, that of Jensen, in 1974. Here he presents the results of detailed investigations of two more cases, those of Gretchen and Sharada. The Gretchen case resembles the Jensen case, but in many instances the Sharada case differs from both. The two case reports comprise approximately two-thirds of the book. There follows a "general discussion" in which the author deals with questions of authenticity in cases of xenoglossy, cases of responsive xenoglossy as instances of incommunicable paranormal capacities, and some linguistic aspects of cases of responsive xenoglossy. A lengthy appendix contains extracts of transcripts from sessions with Gretchen. A second consists of translated extracts of notes and tape recordings.
