The aim of this extremely useful anthology is to present all sides of the subject of reincarnation in chapters written by Eastern and Western scholars and researchers. There are 17 essays arranged in three categories. The Pros (6), the Cons (5), and On the Fence (6). The 17th chapter is by Joyce Berger and provides a summary of the evidence (but no conclusion). There are two very helpful appendices. The first is a survey of resources listing individual researchers and their addresses, research organizations, membership organizations, religious bodies, journals, and cassette tapes. The second appendix is an annotated bibliography of articles and books in English, with the following sections: General, Criticisms of the Reincarnation Hypothesis, Reincarnation and Buddhism, Reincarnational Hinduism, Reincarnation and Theosophy, Reincarnation and Christianity, Reincarnation and Judaism, Claimed Memories of Prior Lives—General, Claimed Memories of Prior Lives—Spontaneous, Cases of Children, Claimed Memories of a Prior Life—Hypnotic Regression, Claimed Memories of Prior Lives—Past Life Therapy, Claimed Memories of Past Lives—Drug-Induced, in Cases of the Reincarnation-Type, "Unsolved" Cases of the Reincarnation-Type, Purported Posthumous Readings of Past Lives, Prevalence and Variety of the Idea of Reincarnation and Karma. This excellent compilation closes with a very good index. No acknowledgments are given except in one case, so it is assumed that all essays were written specifically for this volume. |
