Lives and Letters in American Parapsychology: A Biographical History, 1850-1987 Berger, Arthur S.
Berger, who is president of the International Institute for the Study of Death, provides scholars, teachers, and general readers with an overview of parapsychology in the United States by focusing on the major figures in the field. There are six sections, the first five of which cover chronological periods. The first, covering 1851-1905, consists of a biography of Richard Hodgson. The second covers 1906-1920 and consists of a portrait of James H. Hyslop. The third, for the years 1921-1938, contains portraits of Walter Franklin Prince and William McDougall. The years 1939-1980 are covered in the fourth, which is about Gardner Murphy, Gaither Pratt, and J.B. Rhine. The fifth section is on the period from 1981-1987, with accounts about or by Laura Dale, Louisa E. Rhine, Gertrude R. Schmeidler, and Montague Ullman. The last section contains summaries of the careers, interests, and work of 25 present-day parapsychologists. In "Respice, Adspice, Prospice," Berger discusses the future prospects of parapsychology.
