Paranormal Foreknowledge: Problems and Perplexities

Eisenbud, Jule

This is a clinical and theoretical approach to the problem of precognition by a psychiatrist who has wrestled with it for over 30 years. Part I, "Cases," consists of six chapters in which he presents precognitive case material drawn from his psychoanalytic practice, delving into the psychodynamics involved. Part II, "Hypotheses," consists of 10 chapters. He discusses the "passive" and "active" approaches to precognition, the former demanding nothing beyond cognitive abilities of humans, whereas the latter utilizes "the possibilities of active extrasensory and psychokinetic influences in the development of future events" (p. 117). Eisenbud presents his own compound theory of precognition, which is an active approach. In essence, he proposes that humans create the future they "foresee." Several appendices serve as additional histories and discussions supplementing the text.
