This volume is based on the author's Gifford Lectures for the academic year 1986-87, but his interest in the topic began 40 years earlier. In the first chapter he points out that there are three possible mathematician and SPR Council Member Ivor Grattan-Guinness to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882.
