Crime and the Occult: How ESP and Parapsychology Help Detection Tabori, Paul
Paul Tabori, a native of Hungary, is a crime reporter who has written popular books on parapsychology. In this book he relates many instances in which a psi factor may have been involved in crime investigation. His main concern, in his words, has been to include cases "in which someone has solved or presented a crime purely by some mental process for which we have no materialistic explanation, at the moment. The men and women whose stories are told and examined here have actually achieved this; nor do they particularly care whether the skeptic believes them or not. The material has been taken from police archives or the personal memoirs of officials, most of whom are quite unconcerned with the pros and cons of psychical research, and who have simply registered the facts" (p. 113). Subjects covered are hypnosis and suggestion, psychometry, clairvoyance, motor automatisms such as dowsing or the pendulum, and precognition. Most of the cases come from the European countries, Hungary in particular. It is by no means an exhaustive survey, because many of the better known works of Tenhaeff in Holland with Croiset and other sensitives, are not included. However, it can be used as a starting point in surveying the applications of psi to the problems involved in solving crimes.
