An Experience of Phantoms

Rogo, D. Scott

This is a survey of apparitions of the dead and the living, including apparitions associated with poltergeists, animals, hauntings, and out-of-body experiences. It is useful because it not only draws on the most important historical studies and cases, but it also describes current research and theories on the nature of apparitions and their implications. Rogo, a parapsychologist who specializes in the investigation of spontaneous psi experiences, suggests that the study of spontaneous psi "can offer insights into the process of psychical phenomena that may well elude us in the laboratory" (p. 10). Recent cases are included—some of which were his own and others that he investigated himself. He concludes that "apparitions, as no other phenomenon, bring to the fore that man is a spiritual being . . . . Far from being governed by our physical universe they transcend it. It is no wonder that so many who have experienced phantoms, whether by seeing an apparition or by having an out-of-the-body experience, acquire from that experience the belief that man is a far greater mystery than is the material universe in which we live" (p. 202). An annotated bibliography of "suggested readings" is appended.
