The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and SpiritsGuiley, Rosemary Ellen
This well-researched encyclopedia covers exactly what it purports to cover: apparitions, haunts, and poltergeists ("ghosts") and some of the major cases of mediumship and spiritualism ("spirits") as well as those who investigated them. Major articles can be 1-2 pages, and a bibliography of scholarly sources is given for many of them. Many examples of this type of encyclopedia have been published over the past 25 years, many copying others in several respects. This one stands out because obviously much original research went into it; it is multidisciplinary, covering not only psychical research literature but folklore, anthropology, and comparative religion; and it maintains a high tone throughout. It has 400+ entries, and it is an excellent first source to go to answer inquiries about anything to do with "ghosts" or "spirits." For many it may provide all the information they require.
